The Many Firsts of Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris

On Saturday, November 7th, 2020, it was announced that Joe Biden had won the 2020 presidential election becoming the 46th president-elect and that his running mate, Kamala Harris, would become the vice president-elect, signifying a historic win in American politics.

Already having shattered a few glass ceilings by becoming the first black and Asian-American woman to be picked as a vice presidential candidate, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s election win has brought many more firsts with it. Here are some of the “firsts” with regards to vice president-elect Kamala Harris and why her role as vice president is so significant:

The First Woman, Black & Asian-American Vice President

Kamala Harris has been called a “woman of many firsts” after becoming the first woman, and the first black and Asian-American vice president-elect, and soon-to-be a vice president of many firsts as well. Seeing a woman of color assume one of the highest and most esteemed positions in our country has been a huge inspiration to many young girls and women everywhere, and has been a huge step forward for women, and, specifically women of color, who are looking to run for office and who are wanting to aim for the highest leadership positions in our nation. By becoming the vice president-elect, Kamala Harris has helped to shatter many glass ceilings for women and for people of color in our nation.

The First “Second Gentleman”

Another first that we will be seeing with regards to this new presidency and vice-presidency is that Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, will also break gender stereotypes by becoming the first-ever Second Gentlemen. Since previous vice presidents have all been men, there have only ever been Second Ladies to the vice presidents in the United States. However, Doug Emhoff will also become a man of firsts as well by becoming the first Second Gentlemen to his vice president wife, Kamala Harris.

We at Ayada Leads would like to congratulate vice president-elect Kamala Harris on her historic win, and hope that her becoming the first woman of color vice president in the history of the United States will encourage and inspire other young girls and women to run for office.
