CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

There are certain eligibility requirements in order to run for public office in the United States.

Follow the charts below to see if you are eligible to run for a specific political office.

For Federal Offices: 

Representative in the U.S. HouseMust be at least 25 years old, a citizen for at least 7 years, and a resident of the state you represent
Senator in the U.S. SenateMust be at least 30 years old, a citizen for at least 9 years, and a resident of the state you represent
President / Vice President of the United StatesMust be at least 35 years old, a natural-born citizen, and a U.S. resident for at least 14 years

 

For Local Government (Minnesota)

For All Candidates Must
  • Be eligible to Vote in MN
  • Have only filed to run for one office per election cycle
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have maintained residence in your district for at least 30 days before the general election
  • Have rights restored if convicted of a felony before running for office
For Major Party Candidates Must
  • Have participated in the party’s most recent precinct caucuses
Governor / Lieutenant Governor Must
  • Be at least 25 years old
  • Must be a Minnesota resident for at least a year before the general election
State Judicial Officers Must
  • Be licensed to practice law in MN
State Senator or Representative Must
  • Be a resident of MN for at least one year before the general election
  • Must be a resident of their district of at least 6 months before the general election
County Sheriff Must
  • Be licensed as a peace officer in MN
School Board Member Must
  • Not be registered as a predatory offender
